Modern Day Barbie

ENJOY SCROLLING I was scrolling through all my blogspots (published and drafts) and I totally forgot about this one!  I think I didn't publish it initially because I thought there weren't enough looks.  I don't know what I was thinking.  I love creating Style Files because for me scrolling through a page with a bunch of crazy outfits inspires me even more to want to go ham when I put together my outfits.  So before I forget to publish this...

Weekly Round Up #4

OLD SCHOOL It's been a super long time since my last Weekly Round Up.  Looking back at it, my style and writing since has definitely changed.  I've been editing a lot of my photos on Photoshop because I'm on the 30 day free trial and it's been a blast.  It takes longer to complete a post but I love the uniqueness I get to express.  I'm trying to make my blog mine.  As in, I want to add more of my personality into it.  Not just my style, but my astetics.  As of late, it's been more old soul.  I think I've reached this point where I'm getting sick of the typical, trendy, ascetics that never fails to pop up on my Instagram.  The boyfriend jeans, Stan Smiths, and Daniel Wellington watches.  You know I'm talking about.

It wasn't this week (however I feel the need to mention this), but I started to declutter my life from all that.  All the simplistic, white themed, pleasing-for-awhile accounts and started surrounding myself with accounts that truly gave me inspiration on what I want to wear in the morning.  I get tired of seeing those been-there-seen-those accounts.  I prefer following accounts with wacky personality, filled with colours and life.

The roses in the picture above came in a floral arrangement my mom brought home from work.  She explained to me how every Friday her office throws the arrangement out and gets a new one Monday.  But, they are still gorgeous when they get dumped and some flowers haven't even gotten the chance to bloom.  It's such a waste.  I'm really glad she took them home this week.  I separated some into old empty jars and placed them around the house.  This one resides in my room.

My mom, sister, and I went to a Malaysian restaurant where we tried their nasi lamak and asam laska.   Two very popular and super tasty Malaysian dishes.  Here's the sunset after our meal.  The city isn't only skyscrapers and pollution (ish).

LEFT This Lavender Hand & Nail enriching cream by Soap Stories amsterdam (I don't think they have it online) was gifted to me form my mom for my birthday.  My hands have always been unfortunately really dry and now a days I'm really noticing the lines on my hand which is scaring me to be honest.  I really needed a moisturizer for them and I was so grateful to receive this.  I use it everyday now.

RIGHT I found an old pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans last week that were red but had already been cropped to the knee.  They were previously in storage for who knows how many years and had this really musky old smell.  I had an idea to transform them into a denim skirt because I thought that way I would get the most use out of it.  I popped it into the washer and thus began another sewing project I was thrilled about.  Enthusiastically, I wore it to school Thursday.

When I got to my locker in the morning to get my books and everything, I squatted down to reach my binders which are at the bottom of my locker and heard the most worrying sound of my skirt ripping.  The rip was probably and inch and I thought I looked cool and seemed to go with the distressed look.  Spoke too soon.  As the day went by, one leg stretch to another and the rip became even longer.  I though it couldn't get any worse.  Little did I expect that when I was walking home from school, I would slip on ice and split it even further.  So there you have it, an awkwardly long rip in my skirt that I have to now figure out a way to patch it up.  Any ideas/colour suggestions?

Yesterday, I also started watching Grey's Anatomy.  Yup, I caved.  I'd heard so many people at school buzzing about the show for years and always knew I wanted to start it but also knew I had a lot of other shows to keep on top of. (Ex. Criminal Minds, Baby Daddy, Pretty Little Liars etc.)  To date, Grey's Anatomy has 12 freaking seasons.  Which is one of the main reasons why I was a bit sceptical on starting it.  Well here we are.  I binged 4 episodes last night, (I'm currently on S01E05) and don't look forward to more procrastination.  What can you do...

do you have anything interesting planned for this week?  i personally am not excited to go back to school.

Aouadi Spring 2016 Couture

Pictures taken from aoudai.paris

MEDIEVAL PEASANT That was my initial impression.  There's a mixture of old structure and modern cut.  I've been really into renaissance wear and I was quite drawn to this collection.  Not a usually one for me.

I love the french square neckline and the delicate embroidery.  I've recently come to extremely appreciate the amount of workmanship put into embroidering.  It takes a lot of precision and time.  This collection plays around with a lot of textures and fabrics.  It's almost as if Aouadi took the garment of a medieval peasant and turned it into a timeless luxury.  It just comes to show that there can be beauty in the simplest of things; that there is always room for your own flare and contributions.

Some of the pieces have structure resembling a corset, others are layered over a white blouse, but what really gives it a simplistic, dated yet elegant, and sophisticated appeal is the neutral pallet.  An almost bland one.  Yet this collection is nowhere near bland.  This collection also incorporates a masculine appeal, especially in the last two looks.  From the pants to what reminds me of a petty coat,  this is what separates the new from the old.

These are my favourite looks from Yacine Aouadi's Spring 2016 Couture collection.

which brands have you been loving lately?  i love discovering new ones

My 16th Birthday Look

When I finally had enough consistent time to begin a new sewing project, I was thrilled.  My previous piece I sewed was for my school's fashion show and I'd been itching to start something new.  Gratefully, I finished in time to wear it specially on my birthday!  I'm in love with the vibrant colours and the gorgeous pattern.  I do plan on writing a more in depth post on it.

My day began with a lovely homestyle brunch at the Golden Griddle with my little sister.  I got the sunny side up egg over spinach and bread with potatoes. (potatoes are my ride or die) My sister got a breakfast burrito and greek salad.  When I went to pay, the guy charged us $417.20 instead of $17.20!  Good thing it wasn't too early in the morning for me to go without noticing.  That was insane.

We originally planned on going to Menchie's seeing as I had a $5 credit to spend for my birthday, but our brunch was so delicious and filling I thought it'd be best to go another time.  I don't know if you know this, but if you sign up for a Menchie's account, every year around your birthday you receive $5 off your purchase.  I honestly never go to Menchie's any other time through out the year :)  Life hack?  Life hack.

As I've gotten older (which by the way I can't believe I'll almost only have 2 years left of high school um), I've noticed that I'm not a huge party person.  I'm more so the one you'll find sitting on a couch with my head rested on my hand.  So, I didn't have a huge celebration which I didn't mind at all.  Sena came over midway through the day and we watched "The Room" which is an amazing movie with incredible actors <3

My mom then took Sena, my sister, and I out for a delicious sushi dinner. mmm.  Just thinking about it is making my mouth all tingly.  It was a very tiny independent restaurant but their sushi was incredible.  (sushi is also my ride or die)

Probably my favourite part of my day was spent at a huge park after the wonderful dinner.  It was  around 8:30 pm so the park was dark and desolate excluding that one runner we passed on the way in.  Other than that, we pretty much had the place to ourselves.  This park had a big pit with a bunch of large landscape rocks encircling it.  So you know what that means... bon fire!  I'd been wanting to have a bon fire for the longest time.  I've never been to an overnight camp and was always curious how a bon fire would feel.  Also, Camp Rock may have had an influence on that too :)  We brought snacks, blankets, and wood.  It was definitely a challenge getting the fire started because the place was a bit damp from the previous day but I had a blast.  :) Happy faces all around :)

677

A quick documentation of Sena and I earning our "street cred".

Also, an attempt at my Photoshop skills.

What better way to spend March break than with your best friend; exploring run down areas of downtown?  We spent a while searching up cool abandoned buildings to explore in our area. 677 was the abandoned building's number.  Come to think of it I really should have taken a quick picture of the address when we found it.  Proof.  That being said, we didn't actually have the guts to go in.  Are there supposed to be cars parked in the "abandoned" building's outdoor parking lot?  Perhaps our googling skills are not up to par.  So we spent our day roaming the area and finding perfect spots to take pictures.

Stairs like these remind me of New York City.

The infamous* BOIE bench covered in infamous BOIE bird poop; pronounced {bow-e}

*not one really knows about it but us

On our little adventure, we made our way down a ditch and found a bunch of spray cans.  We're not much of grafittiers but we did mark our initials on an old cement block before getting kicked out of what the lady claimed was Private Property.  I personally don't know why anyone would want to own that property.

Thrifted Goodies

I used to never be the person unable to resist the urge to have to buy something before I left a store but thrifting is a game changer.  Especially when it's 50% off.  Every time I go, there's always something new to discover and fall in love with.  Just scanning the racks fills you with joy and inspiration.

"Oh this skirt would look stellar with a printed button-up blouse and mules"
"Eek do you really think I could pull off this grampa style cardigan?"
"What if I wore this scarf as a belt..."

The best part is being able to try it all on.  There are so many different styles there that I'm curious to try because

a) it's all over my Instagram
or
b) it just looks too good to put down and walk away from

This slip dress I found was by far my favourite from the heap  It's a band new Topshop dress (and still had the tags on!)  It's a velvet fabric with a gorgeous winter floral pattern.  It is a few sizes too big but small enough that I can still wear it.  I was planning on layering it over a blouse anyways.  I'm just so excited to have an occasion to wear it too.  Actually, a bunch of my friends are going to a fancy Italian restaurant tonight.  I would go but for some un usual reason I'm just not in the mood.  Does anybody else ever fell that way?  On top of that I've got a lot of projects to work on and things to do around the house.  I feel like I would more-so regret going than not.  ugh

This is another gorgeous top I bought because first of all blues are my favourite colours and secondly the pattern really pleases me.  I really am not a huge flowery type person because it's a bit too "girly"for me.  However simple dark floral patterns like these and the former Topshop piece, I really enjoy.

I found a really old Jeremy Scott knit but didn't leave with.  Although I know it's designer, I couldn't justify it's necessity in my closet.

I also found this colourful striped denim skirt that totally had Heli bells written all over it.

Miu Miu is that you?
